2014 is almost over, and Nintendo gets more and more predictable, so it's a nice moment, to speculate about Nintendo's plans.
What do you think, Nintendo will do?
And if you want, why?

Q1 2015 (January-March)
  • Next Gen Handheld gets Announced. Seeing that the 3DS is 5 years old, and the fact it finally got Hacked, Iwata is most likely going to include the Nintendo's Next Gen Handheld, for their yearly 'Plans for the coming Fiscal Year' Report, in the same way they did, with the 3DS and Wii U.
  • Pokémon Z gets Announced. Game Freak has a tradition of Announcing a new Pokémon Game in Q1, and Releasing it in Q3. Also, it's a tradition, that a Remake of the same Generation is Released, 2 years after the original 2 (at least, looking at Japanese Release Dates). A Pokémon X2Y2 or Z is just unavoidable, for 2015.
  • DSiWare, WiiWare, and Wii Support ended. While the DS is dead for years, it's time Nintendo will stop Supporting DSiWare, WiiWare, and Wii Development. The lack of interest with First Parties, Second Parties, Third Parties, Indies, Retailers, and Gamers are more than enough reasons, to finally quit those.
Q2 2015 (April-June)
  • One of the E3 2014 Games gets Released. That's what happens, every year.
  • A lot of Games are shown, during the E3 Direct. I don't need to explain why, I hope.
Q3 2015 (July-September)
  • Next Gen Handheld will be shown. Finally, we'll know how the Handheld will look like, or at least, its Prototype.
  • Last 3DS Redesign Announced, and Released. If the Next Gen Handheld will actually come, the 3DS will get its last Redesign, during this Generation. If it's the last one it'll get at all, it'll likely lose the 3D Effect, DS/DSi Support, and Online Play, in order to make the Price as low as possible. After all, we got a new 3DS Redesign every single year, and it was always Announced, in Q3.
Q4 2015 (October-December)
  • Pokémon Z Released. I already explained it, back in Q1 2015.
  • Half the E3-Announced Games Released. Most likely in or around November, just like every other year.
Q1 2016 (January-March)
  • Next Gen Handheld Launched. Although it's not in 2015, I just wanted to conclude this Post, with the Launch of the new Handheld.
For your information, the shortest living Console, was the GameCube, with only 4 years of existence, and the shortest living Handheld, was the Gameboy Colour, with only 2 years of existence. Spin-Off Handhelds like Pokémon Mini, Virtual Boy, etc. are not included.
However, the longest living Handheld, was without doubt, the Nintendo DS, with a big 6 years in its Generation, and an additional 2 years, after the 3DS came out.

So, what do you all think?
Post your own Speculations, here.

I don't think Next Gen handheld would be good. They have already made a better 3DS, why making a new one, after 1 year?! I don't think this will happen. I just hope it doesn't

Well, I don't say they will, I only say it's possible.
Also, New 3DS is the DSi of the 3DS, and the DSi came out, in 2009, whereas the 3DS came in 2011, so the DSi has also been at the edge, of its Genno.

As the History goes:
Gameboy: 1990-1998 (8 years)
Gameboy Colour: 1998-2001 (3 years)
Gameboy Advance: 2001-2005/2007 (4 years + 2)
Nintendo DS: 2005-2011/2012 (6 years + 1)
Nintendo DSi: 2009-2011/20?? (2 years + ongoing)
Nintendo 3DS: 2011-20?? (ongoing)
New Nintendo 3DS: 2015-20?? (ongoing)

So, as you can see, the Average Lifespan of a Nintendo Handheld, is roughly 5 years, and since the 3DS will turn 5 years old, next March, plus some rumours have been Released about it, plus the fact it got Pirated + Hacked, Next Gen Handheld seems very likely, now.

On the bright side: If this Genno is over, no Firmware Updates will be Released, anymore, which means, that Hackers will have their free will, on the 3DS.

On the more serious note:

Q1 2015 (January-March)

Too fast :S New 3DS was just announced! I guess new console will be announced around mid-late 2016 and released around 2017, but it's only my guess. Sinnoh confirmed for 2020 :3

Pokémon Z gets Announced.

Let's wait and see.

Q1: More Amiibo confirmations. Maybe a Direct covering Mario Party 10? Maybe Amiibo in Splatoon?
Q2: METROID. METROID. METROID.
Q3: I guess something like Star Fox release date? More Smash DLC?
Q4: I seriously have no clue, but I guess Nintendo will finally catch up with competition and maybe, MAYBE introduce a paid subscription like PS+ or XBL Gold for free games. I wish.

Did you read my Post, just above yours?
I clearly explained why and how.
Besides, New 3DS is not a New Generation, and it was Announced, a few months ago.

Umm, the 3DS came out in 2011, so by Q1 of next year, it'll only be 4 years old. I agree with everything else, though.

I can't even fathom their next move, as far as handhelds are concerned.  I'm looking forward to them, though...

I wonder if the entire 'DS' moniker will be dropped altogether?  The venerable Game Boy name was retired after many years of service, guess we'll see....

Personally, I'd love to see something done with those WiiU controllers.  Can they be hacked/manipulated, somehow, to run games as a dedicated handheld device, or?

They already did, a 3DS is not a DS.

That's not even technically possible.
The GamePad gets wirelessly powered by the Wii U Console, it can't be used as a dedicated Device, no matter how hard you try.
But if you really want something, how about a Wii U Capture Card (Records the Wii U GamePad Screen):
